Pill-based filtering
What I did
I re-designed the filtering experience within Boomnation's job search mobile app to drive application quantity. Within one month of shipping the feature, we saw an increase of ~8%.
Context
This was an in-house project for BoomNation, an app that helps blue collar workers find jobs. When worker applications are low, employers using the applicant tracking system churn at a higher rate. In an effort to meet quarterly objectives and reduce churn, the product team sought a solution to drive application quantity and quality.

Role
Research, Design, Prototyping
Before diving into any re-design of the UX, the product team and I performed a series of user testing sessions to identify usability issues in the current job search experience.
Testing
After conducting several testing sessions, there emerged a series of glaring weaknesses in the existing job search experience.
Competitive analysis
In addition to user testing, I performed a competitive analysis of the 6 largest job search applications to familiarize myself with best practices in search and filtering.
I explored a variety of layouts based on the insights derived from my competitive analysis and usability testing. I continued iterating until the problems identified above had been resolved.
The result
The search and filter process underwent a complete overhaul, combining quick-filter pills, bottom sheets, and a sticky button to toggle between map and list view.
KPIs
The filter rework was successful, resulting in an 8% increase in job applications within the first month of release. This should continue to help employers get more qualified applicants on job their postings.
